Job DescriptionDo you enjoy working directly with contractors to verify project accuracy and ensure Iowa roadways are safe? If yes, you would be a great fit for a Highway Technician Senior in our Construction office position at the Iowa Department of Transportation! Shift: 7:45 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday. Hours may vary and the position may be on call 24 hours a day during emergency and/or weather conditions. Some overnight travel may be required.Minimum Qualification RequirementsGraduation from high school, GED, or equivalency, plus at least four years of full‑time work in highway maintenance, equipment operation, construction inspection, field work in engineering survey, or materials inspection and testing.Four years of education and/or full‑time experience (as described above), with thirty semester hours of post‑high‑school education equating to one year of full‑time experience.Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch with at least eighteen months of full‑time work as a Highway Technician or Construction Technician.Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch with at least twenty‑four months of full‑time work as a Highway Technician Associate.Additional Qualification RequirementsMust possess a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire and obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License with required endorsements within a timeframe determined by the appointing authority.Pre‑employment drug screen and participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program, subject to federal regulations.Pre‑employment physical verifying the physical ability to perform the duties described.May be required to obtain and maintain Herbicide Applicator certification from the Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.May be required to obtain and maintain certification for testing materials and operating specialized equipment as required by the Iowa DOT Technical Training and Certification Program.May be required to attend a comprehensive bridge inspection course required by the National Bridge Inspection Standards.Travel, including overnight travel, may be required; employees must arrange transportation to and from assigned work areas.Employees may be required to reside within a defined driving time from the assigned work location.Employees must respond to emergency situations as required.Employees must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.Equal Opportunity and E-VerifyThe Iowa Department of Transportation is an equal‑opportunity employer.
