Senior Staff Accountant (Finance)Reports to: Chief Financial OfficerSalary: $83,990.00/yrStatus: Regular Full-Time (Exempt)Location: 205 N Bluff Street Winnebago, NE 68071Job Purpose & Position OverviewThe Senior Staff Accountant will be a strategic thought-partner, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer. The Senior Staff Accountant will play a critical role in partnering with the senior leadership team in strategic decision making and operations as the Winnebago Tribe continues to enhance its quality of programs. This is a tremendous opportunity for a finance and operations leader to maximize and strengthen the internal efficiency and capacity of a well-respected, high-impact organization.Specific Job Duties/ResponsibilitiesDemonstrate the Winnebago Tribe's core mission, vision, and values.Prepare monthly financial statements.Execute monthly bank and credit card reconciliations.Prepare and post journal entries.Enter and reconcile leases.Provide audit support and communicate accounting and reporting issues to regulatory agencies, reviewing, analyzing, and preparing supporting documents and related materials.Maintain proficiency in all day-to-day finance department activities.Complete month-end and year-end close procedures and ensure all reconciliations are completed monthly before the deadline.Maintain a system of internal controls and continuously monitor internal controls throughout various divisions of the Tribe.Support the Assistant Controller, Controller, and CFO in maintaining short-range and long-term financial plans, forecasts, and updates.Supervise various accounting staff and evaluate their performance, providing training or professional development opportunities.Monitor the Tribe's financial policies and procedures, ensuring they are updated as needed.Serve as backup or assist with the following:Process payroll bi-weekly in compliance with Federal, State, and Tribal law.Maintain accurate records and supporting documentation for payroll transactions.Post payroll journal entries and payroll accruals.Draw down available grant funds from various grantor sites.Monitor all Federal and State compliance reporting on a timely basis.Manage and maintain the Tribe's program budgets.Set up awards, projects, and tasks based on identified grants and budgets.Work with budgets to identify variances and report them in a timely manner.Assist with the preparation of financial information for grants and other funding requests.Prepare status updates on grant expenditures for management.Work with Project Managers and the accounting team to properly code purchase requisitions and invoices for grant tracking of project expenditures.Perform other job-related work as assigned and directed.These duties are illustrative; omission of specific duties does not exclude similar or related tasks.Required Qualifications/SkillsBachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration or equivalent education and experience.At least 2 years of general accounting experience or training (governmental accounting or finance experience a plus).Familiarity with fund accounting preferred.Well organized with superior numerical skills and attention to detail.Ability to make decisions recognizing established precedents and practices.Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work well as part of a team.Effective communication, both written and oral.Problem‑solving ability, recognizing shortcomings and carrying out effective solutions.Project management from conceptual stage through completion.Proficiency with computers and office management software.Valid driver's license and eligible under the Tribe's eligibility guidelines preferred.Training RequirementsMust attend all department meetings and training courses as directed by the Assistant Controller or Controller.Physical RequirementsNormal to light office work, including the ability to lift up to 10 lbs. Must regularly walk, stand, and sit for extended periods and use hands to operate computer keyboard, phone, and various office equipment. Must talk and hear regularly during daily duties.Mental RequirementsReading, writing, and calculating. Above average social interaction skills. Reasoning and analysis.
