Iowa Air National Guard Aircraft Mechanic Position

This position is open to members of the Iowa Air National Guard (Title 32 Military Technicians, Title 5 Civilians, Drill Status, M-Day). The location is 185th ARW, Sioux City, IA.

Duties

As an Aircraft Mechanic (Title 5), WG-8852-11, you will:

  • Direct, monitor or perform overall maintenance, servicing, inspections and documentation for one or more aircraft.
  • Perform aircraft inspections requirement such as preflight/postflight and end of runway inspections.
  • Perform aircraft ground handling procedures such as launching, recovering, towing, safe for maintenance, fueling and defueling aircraft and any other maintenance tasks needed to maintain the aircraft.
  • Prepare aircraft for painting by washing, cleaning, lubricating, masking off, scuff sanding and jacking aircraft.
  • Coordinate and oversee the work of journey level workers in other trades working simultaneously on the assigned aircraft.
  • Coordinate with production control to direct short notice availability of the aircraft to accomplish work on delayed discrepancies and other scheduled maintenance to meet mission requirements.
  • Observe and inspect performance and work procedures to insure compliance with applicable technical publications, directives and local policy.
  • Maintain and service aircraft systems such as engine oil, hydraulic, fuel, oxygen and any other type of fluids.
  • Install, remove, inspect and adjust aerial delivery systems to mission requirements.
  • Remove and install aircraft external fuel tank and travel pod.
  • Comply with safety, fire, security, environmental and housekeeping regulations.
  • Inspect and determine if A-10, F-15, F-16 and H-60 aircraft have been properly prepared and are ready to be painted.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Conditions of Employment:

  • Minimum Experience: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with the skill to remove and replace aircraft parts, accessories, and components, and to make adjustments and settings according to established specifications. Must be skilled in the use of hand tools and test equipment.
  • Specialized Experience: WG 8852 11 - Applicant must have the following experience: Experience or training installing, adjusting, aligning, troubleshooting, and functionally testing the various major and minor mechanical and pneudraulic systems on an aircraft during overhaul or modification. Experience coordinating the work of other mechanics, and scheduling maintenance to ensure completion of critical actions and optimum workflow. Must have the ability to instruct lower graded mechanics, military and other personnel in the disassembly and re-assembly of crash damaged engines, transmissions, gearboxes, hydraulic components, and fuel controls sufficient for the exhibit to be returned to its shipping container. Experience performing, coordinating, and/or overseeing the work and any periodic inspections to be done on an aircraft whether it is alone, or with the assistance of other mechanics and/or workers.

Education: Security Clearance Requirement: Employment is subject to attaining and maintaining a clearance as required by this position. If the selectee does not possess the applicable security clearance when hired, application must be made within 30 days of the start date. Failure to make application for the required security clearance will result in termination of employment.

Trial Period Requirement: As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 2-year trial period or 1-year (Veterans Preference Eligibles Only) during which we will evaluate your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest.
