SUMMARY

The EHS Specialist is responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations under local, state, and federal agencies. This position emphasizes environmental programs such as stormwater management, air permitting, SPCC, hazardous materials, and EPA compliance, while supporting occupational safety initiatives. The EHS Specialist will work closely with management to maintain regulatory compliance and implement best practices for environmental stewardship and worker safety.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Environmental Responsibilities (Primary Focus):

  • Assist in the management of environmental compliance programs including stormwater, air emissions, wastewater, and SPCC plans.
  • Maintain and submit required reports to EPA, state agencies, and local authorities.
  • Oversee hazardous waste management, including proper storage, labeling, and disposal in accordance with RCRA.
  • Conduct environmental audits and inspections to ensure compliance with permits and regulations.
  • Develop and maintain environmental management systems (EMS) and sustainability initiatives.
  • Coordinate sampling, monitoring, and recordkeeping for environmental programs.
  • Respond to environmental incidents and lead root cause investigations.
  • Ensure compliance with Title V air permits, stormwater pollution prevention plans (SWPPP), and spill prevention control and countermeasure (SPCC) requirements.
  • Be a participant in the facility's HazMat team.

Safety Responsibilities (Support Role):

  • Assist with OSHA compliance programs and participate in safety audits.
  • Support emergency response planning, including HazMat team participation.
  • Provide training on environmental and safety topics to employees and management.
  • Participate in safety committee meetings and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Other Responsibilities (Support Role):

  • Facilitate PSM programs: MOC, PHAs, PSSR, incident investigation
  • Maintain documentation, training records, KPIs, and database updates
  • Support audit readiness and regulatory compliance
  • Interface with plant personnel, contractors, and regulatory bodies

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED is required. Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Safety, or related field is preferred. Preferred experience includes 3–5 years in environmental compliance within manufacturing or food processing; knowledge of EPA, RCRA, SPCC, OSHA, and air permitting regulations.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to think and communicate in a fast-paced environment.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents in the English language such as applications, training materials and procedure manuals.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to apply mathematical applications to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical, diagram, written and/or verbal form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to use computers and all standard programs used by the industry and the ability to learn and effectively use any and all other computer programs that are or will be made available. Strong analytical and organizational skills are required. Must have the ability to manage multiple projects and meet regulatory deadlines. Must hold a valid driver's license due to periodic business travel.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to move about the facility. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger; handle; or feel/hold objects; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; speak; hear taste and smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee will be required to be physically capable of being on the facility's HazMat team.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to cold/hot and/or humid conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, cold/hot temperature and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The work environment includes climate extremes found in all areas of plant operations.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to cold/hot and/or humid conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, cold/hot temperature and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The work environment includes climate extremes found in all areas of plant operations.
