POSITION TITLE: Floating Substitute Custodian, full time
DEPARTMENT: Maintenance
REPORTS TO: Director of Buildings & Grounds and Building Principal
Purpose Statement: To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean and efficient place in which to learn, play and develop. To ensure that the physical school facility is kept in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, and safety which maintains the value of the community's investment. Ottumwa Community Schools is seeking quality candidates for substitute custodian positions to assist when employees are not able to be in attendance. These positions are on a day-to-day, on-call, as-needed basis with no guarantee of regularly scheduled work.
QUALIFICATIONS:
* High School education with advanced schooling preferred.
* Three (3) years successful experience as a custodian in a related field preferred.
* Training in boiler operation, floor maintenance, and other custodial specialties preferred.
* Must be able to work well with students, staff, parents, and community members.
* Experience in supervision preferred.
* Have good health with no physical limitations. Must be able to lift 60 lbs. minimum. Must have ability to climb using scaffolding and ladders.
* Ability to read and understand basic instructions.
* Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Keeps building and premises including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times.
* Regulates heat, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, if applicable, to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to insure economical usage of fuel and electricity.
* Shovels, plows, and/or sands walks, driveways, parking areas and steps as appropriate.
* Raises the United States flag at or before 8:00 a.m. on each school day and lowers it at or after 3:30 p.m.
* Sweeps/vacuums and dusts classrooms.
* Cleans corridors after school each day and during the day when their condition requires it.
* Scrubs, hoses down and disinfects restroom/locker room floors daily and cleans all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
* Washes windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year and more frequently if necessary.
* Keeps the grounds free from rubbish.
* Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.
* Cleans all chalkboards and whiteboards at least once a week.
* Reports minor or major repairs needed promptly to the principal and supervisor.
* Reports immediately to the principal and supervisor any damage to school property.
* Remains on the school premises during school hours and/or during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and his/her attendance is required by the administration.
* Assumes responsibility for the opening and/or closing of the building each school day and for determining before leaving that all doors and windows are secured and all lights except those left on for safety reasons are turned off.
* Moves furniture and equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal and supervisor.
* Complies with local laws and procedures for the appropriate storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, waste, and chemicals.
* Cooperates with and works in a courteous manner with students, faculty and staff.
* Floats between buildings as assigned.
* Performs other such duties as assigned by the Director of Building and Grounds.
