Responsible for preparing surfaces and applying paint, enamel, varnishes and other finishes using brushes, rollers and sprayers. Expertise required in mixing and matching pigment, oil, base and thinner in the right proportion to attain the desired outcome. Maintains a safe work area and may train apprentices in the trade.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Painter is responsible for the set-up, operation and maintenance of paint machines. The Painter will operate the equipment according to the specific manufacturing standards to meet customer specifications. The Painter must be able to read and understand work orders. They must follow all company guidelines and safety rules when performing duties.
Primary responsibilities and/or essential functions include, but are not limited to:
SKILLS/SPECIFICATIONS
Proficient in preparing spray guns and nozzles required by paint type in order to get the proper paint flow and coating thickness.
Able to select the correct spray gun system for the material being applied.
Selects paint according to company requirements, and match colors of paint following specified color charts and verifies paint consistency, using a viscosity meter.
Operates lifting and moving devices in order to move equipment or materials so that areas to be painted are accessible.
Sets up portable equipment such as ventilators, exhaust units, ladders, and scaffolding.
Ability to spray prepared surfaces with specified amounts of primers or finish coatings.
Monitors painting operations in order to identify flaws such as blisters and streaks so that their causes can be corrected.
Able to disassemble, clean, and reassemble sprayers and power equipment, using solvents, wire brushes, and cloths for cleaning duties.
Disposes of hazardous waste in an appropriate manner.
Maintain a clean workspace and follow tooling requirements.
Other duties and projects as assigned by the Repair Manager, Repair Supervisor or Team Leader.
EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE/REQUIREMENTS
High School diploma or GED.
Ability to read and comprehend work orders.
OTHER SKILLS/ABILITIES REQUIRED
Dependable. Meets standards of punctuality and attendance.
Mechanically inclined and willingness to learn different tasks.
Complies with all safety rules and procedures.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to; eye safety glasses, work boots and the ability to wear a respirator.
The ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping and handling of materials for more than 50% of the workday.
Ability to lift 50 pounds safely.
Working around heavy moving equipment with intermittent exposure to vibration when using impact tools.
Visual color discrimination. The ability to match or detect differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness.
Near vision (ability to see details at close range).
Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Work in elevated heights and confined spaces. Able to navigate scaffolds, floors, ladders and walking surfaces that are uneven.
Use of respirator as required.
The ability to sustain mental and visual attention to details for sustained periods of time.
WORK SITE ENVIRONMENT
Must comply with all safety requirements at all times and lead by example regarding safety.
Primary work environment subject to extreme heat or cold for considerable amounts of time. Must dress accordingly.
Hearing protection shall be required in certain designated areas to noise levels greater than 80 decibels.
Scaffolds, floors, ladders and walking surfaces may be uneven.
